Riley sager the last time i lied a novel6/12/2023 This is all about trying to locate the truth as it lies deeply hidden beneath a catalogue of lies. Already haunted by surfacing memories, Emma is suddenly plagued by a security camera pointed directly at her cabin, mounting mistrust from Francesca, and, most disturbing of all, cryptic clues Vivian apparently left behind about the camp’s twisted origins. Yet, it is immediately clear that all is not right at Camp Nightingale. They catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of the very same Camp Nightingale–and when Francesca implores Emma to return to the camp as a painting counselor, Emma sees an opportunity to find closure and move on. Now a rising star in the NYC art scene, Emma turns her past into paintings. The last she–and anyone–saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips. Trigger warnings: Missing person storyline, strong sexual referencesįifteen years ago, summer camper Emma Davis watched sleepily as her three cabin mates snuck out of their cabin in the dead of night.

Shadow Child by Joseph A. Citro6/11/2023 His brother's long-ago disappearance, the loss of his parents, and his wife's recent demise in an auto accident have left him near the edge physically and emotionally. In this book (first published in 1987), however, he deftly melds real-life ancient ruins, a keen eye for the social fabric of small-town Vermont, and a soaring imagination to fashion a gripping tale of a family's life-or-death struggle to save their farm from an enemy far more devastating than banks, taxes, or land developers.Įric Nolan is a man already too familiar with death. Citro's widely read publications about the more haunting history, legends, and lore of New England have earned him a reputation as an expert on themes of the supernatural. To outsiders, the deep, impenetrable forest that blankets Vermont's Green Mountains gives the state its peaceful and verdant mystique, but those same dark woods hide a secret from pre-history that reaches menacingly into the present.

A confederacy of dunces online6/11/2023 Also, while I think this book is hilarious, I never laughed out loud at it, since that's not something I do with books. I will say that if you're someone who needs a lot of plot, a tight structure, and a conventional set of arcs, this book isn't for you. Every one of them makes me believe that they exist outside of the book, that they have little lies and realities that they putter around in off the page. Characters wander into the book when you least expect it, steal a scene, and wander right out. Toole's prose is so damn sharp, consistently surprising, and god, the menagerie of people he invents - so alive, weird, singular, and charming despite being such obvious caricatures. But there's a lightheartedness here, too, a genuinely joyful delight in unveiling the series of remarkably well-drawn characters and the perpetually entertaining situations they get into. I always avoided it because I had absorbed the notion that it's a mean-spirited book, a prurient one. This was on my to-read list for years and years.

Blood Bonds by J. Bree6/11/2023 I don’t fully know how it works, but it’s pretty cool. I did like how Bree focused more on Oli’s bond in Blood Bonds and the power she has, as well as the powers the other bonds have. She only complains about how she is overpowered, but there are far more dangerous people than her? So why isn’t she using her powers to, I don’t know, fight the resistance? Oli is still annoying, and I don’t get why her bonds are in love with her. Not only that, but I loved getting to know her bonds more and see the way they interact with each other. I feel like we finally got a glimpse of these characters, who they are, and what they are capable of. I liked Blood Bonds a little better than Savage Bonds. Who are my friends, and who are my enemies? When loyalties are questioned and Bonds are tested, everything I thought I knew gets turned upside down. Maybe I’ll be a monster of my own creation. With my Bonds desperately trying to reach me and new friendships I never expected, I start to believe that maybe I won’t become the weapon they want me to be. After three years on the run, I’m back in a Resistance camp, chained to a chair as the resident monster.Įverything I ran from, all of the villains of my past, they’re all here to take another bite out of me.

Penny the cruelest month6/10/2023 Feel free to take a look at our Still Life review as well as our Fatal Grace review if you’d like to see what the first two books in the series were all about. The third book in Penny‘s A Chief Inspector Gamache Mystery series, it doesn’t really require you to have read the previous novels, although there is an overarching plot which gets touched upon bit by bit in each book. While I certainly understand the need to treat the subject with the gravity it deserves, I can’t help but rejoice when the world makes some space for a bit of the good old conventions, like it did for The Cruelest Month by Louise Penny. The realm of detective stories has without question changed over time towards a grittier, and I suppose a more realistic depiction of murder and its consequences.
