Klosterman the 90s6/10/2023 ![]() The '90s brought about a revolution in the human condition we're still groping to understand. By the end, exposing someone's address was an act of emotional violence, and nobody picked up their new cell phone if they didn't know who it was. ![]() ![]() In the beginning, almost every name and address was listed in a phone book, and everyone answered their landlines because you didn't know who it was. In between, one presidential election was allegedly decided by Ross Perot while another was plausibly decided by Ralph Nader. It was long ago, but not as long as it seems: The Berlin Wall fell and the Twin Towers collapsed. The Nineties: a wise and funny reckoning with the decade that gave us slacker/grunge irony about the sin of trying too hard, during the greatest shift in human consciousness of any decade in American history. ![]()

Everyone Burns by John Dolan6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Those – like myself – suckled at the breast of Perfidious Albion especially see the public expression of vulnerability as anathema. ![]() Straightforward people are very much in the minority, and in today’s world where idealism has become unfashionable and the concept of self-sacrifice unfathomable, they are in all likelihood an endangered species.įor the rest of us, lying and deception is a necessary social skill. Those more experienced in the ways of the world view them as easy marks, such stuff as the con-man’s wet dreams are made on. They see life essentially through childlike eyes and, because of that, the more cynical members of the human race often consider them foolish and unsophisticated. Such individuals possess a naïveté which is both striking and humbling, and which inspires trust in others because these people are themselves trusting. Their words have no subtext and their hearts are open. ![]()

Who owns england by guy shrubsole6/9/2023 ![]() It is neo-Rousseauism, with its heady mixture of climate change activism and anti-capitalist rebellion, and its romantic call to “rewild” the land back to its primordial state, that now captures the imagination of the disaffected. ![]() The Reds have grown watermelon skins and become Greens. But, as this book demonstrates, its roots lie in the collapse of communism, when Shrubsole and his fellow travellers, no longer able to point to Marxism as a credible alternative form of government, simply adopted an earlier form of grievance politics. It is a commonplace to explain the violent upsurge in environmentalism by “the failure of capitalism” in 2008. Brought up to demonstrate alongside the Greenham women by his CND-supporting mother, suddenly he finds himself without a cause.Īnd there you have it in a nutshell. This comical interpretation of events aside, it is evident that whereas for millions freed from the tyranny of socialism behind the Iron Curtain, and indeed for the missile-adjacent dog walkers of West Berkshire, this was palpably “a good thing”, for Guy Shrubsole, it obviously came as something of a disappointment. ![]() ![]() the perimeter fence was torn down and common rights restored.” ![]() with the sudden end of the Cold War, the cruise missiles left Greenham. The reader is given an early indication of what sort of book this is when the author gives us a potted history of the Cold War: “Ronald Reagan reversed years of détente with the Soviet Union and began calling it the Evil Empire. ![]()

![]() ![]() In the Eastern Europe section we get a view of Yugoslavia times, before the war came on (this book is from 1990), and Czechoslovakia is still existing in it, too. I was pleased that they included my country (Finland) among the cuisines – though some of the dish names are not quite correctly written *lol*. I think this is the thickest of my Moosewood books (a little over 600 pages), and thus took much time to read. It is suggested that one might make different combinations from various cuisines, as long as one takes some care in seeing that they will match well. There are no pictures.īesides the recipes, there is at the end some menu planning idea (with seafood dishes marked), ingredients list with explanation, techniques, tools, plus measurements list of some ingredients, and further reading (pre-1990 stuff). Each cuisine gets its own introduction, and most recipes also. In this book they are: Africa south of the Sahara, Armenia & the Middle East, British Isles, the Caribbean, Chile, China, Eastern Europe, Finland, India, Italy, Japan, Jewish food (Ashkenazi & Sephardic foods each having their part), Mexico, New England, North Africa & Northeast African highlands, Provence, Southeast Asia, and Southern United States. With a few exceptions, each cuisine presented here has both seafood and vegetarian recipes. ![]() Each Sunday, a new ethnic or regional cuisine has its time to be the theme of the day. ![]()

The Blood Race by K.A. Emmons6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() But that hope quickly burns to ash when I realize that we may not be the only ones down here. Alerted by a dream, I realize that Hawk has left the Dimension to come find me. But that's easier said than done when you're trapped in a realm as deadly as your every thought - and dominated by a hierarchy of ravenous wolf packs. I knew that in order for her to stay alive, I had to survive and find a way out. I had no idea who I was, or how I got there - I couldn't remember anything, until I remembered her: Hawk. I awoke in a strange and unfamiliar world, filled with maze-like forest, shadows, and nightmares seemingly as vivid and dangerous as reality. ts before I fell into the bottomless ravine, plunging toward my own death, and bringing about Hawk's at the same time. "Who are you, Icarus, that the earth opens its mouth to receive your blood?" Sensei's words were my last though. ![]() ![]() I used to think that seeing was believing, but now, as I struggle to stay alive below the ravine, I begin to realize that - good or bad - I will see whatever I believe. The black swan book nassim taleb6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() A mountainous terrain is an ideal refuge from the mainstream, except that your enemy is the other refugee competing for the same type of rugged real estate. While the cities were mercantile and mostly Hellenistic, the mountains had been settled by all manner of religious minorities who claimed to have fled both the Byzantine and Moslem orthodoxies. This millennium of peace was interrupted only by small occasional friction within Moslem and Christian communities, rarely between Christians and Moslems. The Levantine cities were mercantile in nature people dealt with one another according to a clear protocol, preserving a peace conducive to commerce, and they socialized quite a bit across communities. The place resembled major cities of the eastern Mediterranean (called the Levant) more than it did the other parts in the interior of the Near East (it was easier to move by ship than by land through the mountainous terrain). For more than a millennium the eastern Mediterranean seaboard called Syria Libanensis, or Mount Lebanon, had been able to accommodate at least a dozen different sects, ethnicities, and beliefs - it worked like magic. ![]()
